Creative Blog: Schoolyard Omelette

By: SYBC Admin

Hey there! This is Creative Blog. This is a blog talk about the things done at Schoolyard Book Company. Today's first blog will cover Schoolyard Omelette. Yes, there is a blogcast about Schoolyard Omelette. That one covers the ideas and concept around it's creation. This blog will talk about Omelette currently.

As you know, Schoolyard Omelette is a section of Schoolyard Book Company's website that covers comic strips, weekly comics, and more. As of now, Omelette has grown into Scramble, and now is housing the Mix-Tape magazine. Omelette may have other things up it's sleeve in the future.

What do you have planned?

If you look at the Summer updates then it should give you a idea as for now. But for Autumn there will be some educational tools coming that could really expand Omelette.

That's pretty cool. Can Omelette become a afternoon destination?

It's possible. Beacuse if you think about AS-IF, and social media sites, there can be a community of sharing content that could really cover many eyes. Especially as the schools get out. That way, it gives the audience a chance to stay connected. Then it becomes more of a relationship with technology. Young people these days are really heavily focused on utilizing phones, and portable devices. That's something that is really important.

Yeah. They are very invested into smaller devices.

Definitely. Because you have to keep in mind, this is really the only device where they can freely use daily. It's great that the big screen is available. Even though we are supposed to be in a "post mobile" world, distributing content through that screen can be like a musical experience. Bridging the gap between the old and new. Using all that we can access to create a unqiue feeling. Not an experience. A feeling.

And look, we know Schoolyard isn't as well versed in the mobile langauge as the rest of tech (big and small) is in. But the context that needs to be expressed is that we can cover something interesting from this point and beyond. Also to understand the mind of those who engage in Schoolyard Omelette. That's where I guess the fun ensues.

Finding solutions to interesting problems.

Yeah. Frankie and Mini Night Diamond are basically the mascots of Omelette.

That's pretty cool. Especially for Mini Night Diamond.

Yeah, because Mini Night Diamond is a "chibi" form of Night Diamond! I used to remember how could I really make Night Diamond pop as a character. Her more adult form tackles very dark environmental subjects. So to see her in a mini form is very heartwarming. She's spinned off into her own identity from the adult version. Many people don't know that. Hopefully they don't read this yet (laughs). At first I was thinking, maybe Frankie and Vampy needed books and more. Yet those are coming, I believe they really were born for Omelette.

Yeah. Everything doesn't have to start as a heavy comic book series.

Exactly! Some of the most popular cartoon series started from comic strips. Like on the blogcast, Omelette really became a home for Schoolyard comic strips that young readers can enjoy. Who better to make that a thing, but Frankie and Vampy. I mean Frankie is Schoolyard's equal to a Mickey, or a Super Mario. This platform is so perfect. Like fitting the last piece of a jigsaw.

Can't forget Mullberry or Push and Lift. Those two series actually were comic strip ideas originally! Fun fact, I was trying to get Push and Lift to an actual newspaper (laughs). Unfortunately, it didn't happen. Now, they finally have a home! The original Push and Lift however, took place in deeper space. Ixona wasn't in that original concept.

Wow! And now Ixona is a major character. What about Mullberry?

Mullberry is the reason Omelette is around! I created Mullberry in the early days of Schoolyard (along with Simple Da Spida Monkey). I really wished I had produced The Friday Night as a newsletter/newspaper. He would of been the pioneer of Schoolyard (laughs). Yet I'm actually ok with how Omelette is the end result instead. Mullberry will always be the OG of Schoolyard Omelette strips.

No need for a newspaper now (laughs). So what continues?

I think continuing to make strides in building a major library of strips, and small weekly comics. I mean, I'm even excited when I read my comics (laughs). So I want Omelette continue to be a destination for our small form content. To convince you that, what I have will last a very long time, and is great enough for you to enjoy forever really.

Omelette is a platform. Omelette is a destination. Omelette is a library. Omelette was designed to be that. It's just up to me, to continue to fill the place with things that anybody can enjoy. In 2024, Omelette will make huge splashes, just by simply existing. And that alone is really a powerful way to look at Schoolyard creatitiy. Something I may have not understood in the past. The lesson is learned now.
